General School Closure Ideas for Year 1
If you would like to do more at home with your child, here are some ideas to keep you busy.
Practice reading and writing numbers up to 50, say how many tens and ones are in each number. Count in 2s, 5s and 10s. On YouTube, there are some great counting videos with Jack Hartman that we have used in class that the children love. For addition and subtraction; practice number bonds up to 20, create fact families for numbers using addition and subtraction facts (e.g. for 16- 10+6=16, 16-6=10 etc), practice crossing the tens boundary in calculations such as 8+7 and 15-8 (using numbers up to 20). We were about to learn about capacity and volume, there are some free resources for this on the White Rose website (see link above). In the Summer term, our learning would include money and time (tell the time to the hour, half hour, revise days of the week/months and seasons).
Practice letter sounds using the sound mats we sent home at parents evening. Keep reading as much as possible. Practice reading and spelling Y1 Common Exception words and practice tricky words. There are links for all of these at the bottom of this page. For writing, we have been working on writing simple sentences with capital letters, full stops, question marks, exclamation marks and finger spaces using the correct letter formation. To challenge your child, ask them to extend their sentences using the words 'and' 'but' or 'because'.
These are just a few ideas, please remember that if you need to contact us, we are available and you can fill in the form at the bottom of the page. In these uncertain times, the most important thing is to stay safe, have as much fun as you can and take care of each other. Our ideas above are just a guide and if you find that it is all too much for you and your child, please don't feel pressured to do them. Make things as enjoyable as you can and spend quality time together.
Take care everyone and stay safe. We hope that we will see you all very soon,
Mrs Leadbeater and Mrs Goncalves.

In year 1, we love phonics! We are working hard to learn our letter sounds in our reading and in our writing. We have fun reading 'alien' and 'nonsense' words using our fab phonics to decode the word.
